Haruko Akagi is the younger sister of Shohoku team captain Takenori Akagi. She first meets Hanamichi Sakuragi at the start of his first year at Shohoku High School. Unlike the fifty other girls who had rejected Sakuragi, Haruko is not repulsed or frightened by him. She recognizes his natural athleticism and introduces him to the Shohoku basketball team. Sakuragi initially joins the team to impress her, but later develops a genuine love for the sport. Haruko herself has an unrequited crush on the star rookie Kaede Rukawa, which creates a romantic rivalry between Sakuragi and Rukawa.

In Their Own Story

Haruko Akagi first appears when she encounters the brash delinquent Hanamichi Sakuragi. While other girls are frightened by him, she is friendly and sees his potential. She asks him if he likes basketball, and when he shows off his athleticism by dunking a ball, she is impressed. She then introduces him to her brother, Takenori Akagi, and the Shohoku basketball team. Throughout the series, Haruko supports the team from the sidelines, cheering for them during games.
